The athletic community was first served a
magazine publication called Hawaii Runners Life in the 80's. In that
publication there was race results, athletes profiles and a race
calendar. A runner could get it in all the local running stores for
free. The publication quietly disappeared at the end of the 80's. To
start the 90's the Race Place magazine started up in its place
but it was made by folks who were not runners. Mindi Jaffre decided
that she could do better so she started up Hawaii Race magazine that
she handed out at races. It was such a good publication that it forced
the Race Place out of bussiness. WhenMindi Jaffre ran for state congress and won she sold her business to a new manager in 1998.
The new Hawaii Race went out of business in November 2002
after serving the running community for 4 years. During a race
at Kualoa Ranch on the North Shore, Louis Tomsic and Christian
Friis decided to continue publishing a magazine to support athletes
in Hawaii. Incidently Christian won the 4 mile cross country race
and Louis finished second. Local Productions became the publisher
& Christian Friis became the editor.
Christian Friis, graduated from HPU with a bachelor
in Journalism in 2001, and a masters in communication in 2002.
Started swimming at the age of six, and was a serious comptetion
swimmer from 12-14 years of age. From 1985-1987 he tried triathlons,
and also got more into running, which is now his main sport, but
he can once in awhile be seen in the waves in a pathetic attempt
to try swimming again...in 1987 he started to concentrate on running,
and has been running ever since.
