The Coolest Marathon
Review: Lou
Tomsic
If you are ready to beat the
summer heat in Hawaii, then this race may be for you. This is
the only marathon that is run on water in the Artic.
Compettitors in this unique event fly out of Svalbard, Norway to a
temporary camp near the North
Pole. The next day, they run a marathon across the frozen Artic Ocean
which may be just 1 foot below. The course of the race is chosen the
day before to avaoid breaks in the ice. Soft conditions can force
competitors in snow shoes. Temperatures can be expected between -20C to
-30C. The winning time was less than 4 hours in the 2004 race for
former Everest summiteer Sean Burch. See all the details at North Pole Marathon.
With global warming continueing the way it is, next year, the
race may be cancelled due to lack of ice.
