Freedom Run Review

Review by: John Burns

The Epilepsy Foundation of Hawaii Freedom 5K and 10K Run/Walk was held July 4 at Kailua High School near the Enchanted Lake area in Kailua.

Ed Kemper provided his humorous and inspiring pep talks before the race, adding significantly to everyone's high spirits before the start. After the race, he continued to MC the event with his welcoming congratulations to everyone at the finish line.

The course started on the backside of Kailua High School and went downhill for a quarter mile on Akiohala Street, then turned right on Keolu Drive for about a mile on relatively level terrain. A right on another portion of Keolu Drive, and quick right 100 yards uphil on Akake Place to the turnaround marked the halfway return spot back to the school. The 10K participants warriored their way through the same 5K course twice. Awards were given to the top 3 in each 5-year age group.

These runs were their largest turnout. Free Jamba Juice refreshments and assorted donuts, breads, and other foods were provided at the finish line, along with many draw-prizes.

Volunteers abounded in all directions, and were vital to the success of this important event to raise money for the Epilepsy Foundation of Hawaii (EFH). Results will soon be posted to their hawaiiepilepsy.com web site.

Kailua High School has consistently been a major and valued player to our running community. Thank you Kailua High School for all that you do exceptionally well! The school will be sponsoring another 5K run in November………………I’ll be there !!!

Race starting line 5 minutes before the race begins.

There were 139 finisers in the 5K, and 86 finishers in the 10K.
