The Honolulu Marathon was December 10, 2006. the weather was cool
and not so windy. The last 3 Honolulu Marathons have had near ideal
running conditions.
The Honolulu Marathon is a quality running event. the course lets
one see fireworks at the beginning of the race. I watched the full
show as I started my 26 mile journey. After about 4 miles, you get
to see the wonderful Christmas decorations in downtown Honolulu.
There is about 4 blocks of spectacular Christmas decorations near
the Governors House. The marathon couse takes you through the cheering
crowds in Waikiki after about 6 miles and really pumps you up with
thier energy. You know the race is really beginning in the dark
uphill of Diamond Head past Kapolani Park after 7 miles.
It is important to pick up a running buddy when doing the long
strait stretch going out to Hawaii Kai. This year I ran that stretch
with Haul Bocca and we altenated leads to break the wind each minute
always ensuring to drink at least one cup of water at each aid station
spaced out every 2 miles. The volunteers where excellent with getting
water to me and I am very thankful for a couple people who rushed
to get me a second cup of water to me on my way by. Once starting
the loop around Hawaii Kai, the sun rises and is getting warmer
for the long strait stetch back to the 22 mile mark where you turn
left.
After turning left, it is the same race course of many races run
from Kapolani Park so I started racing after a very concervative
start. I really picked up the pace the last 4 miles and beat my
time from last year. I recieved a free massage after the race and
contemplate running a faster time last year. the Honolulu Marathon
is a great race to do because the finish line stays open till everyone
finishes the race.
I am thankful for all the runners who said hi to me while I was
running the race and ran with me for a couple miles including Dave,
David, Jay and Haul. It makes the miles go by faster.
