Kalaeloa 20K
Review: John Burns
This was the 2nd of 5 races for the Amino Vital
Marathon Readiness Series. Everyone parked at White Plains Beach
at Kalaeloa (formerly known as Barber Point Naval Station). But,
with minutes before the start, and the parking lot quickly filled
up, many were late for the start. ………So……...next
year………get there early ! !
This flat 20K course (12.4 miles) started about
a half mile from White Plains Beach. There were a couple of gradual
(almost unnoticeable) uphills and downhills. The course went counter-clockwise
in two loops, and finished at the beach. We were lucky this year,
because there was a lot of cloud cover. However, next year, plan
on full sun, and be certain that you are well-hydrated by drinking
plenty of water the day before and day of the race. This course
does not offerhardly any tree cover in the absence of cloud cover.
There was a large turnout with 559 finishers.
After the great workout, many (myself included)
headed directly to the ocean about 200 feet away to relax and
enjoy the beginnings of a great day.
There were plenty of refreshments and sodas, a varitey
of fruits, donuts, etc to replenish everyone’s energy levels.
The next race of this Marathon Readiness Series
is the Schofield 25K on September 24 (just a short 3 weeks away),
when you will hear,
“ . . . . Get Ready . . . . Set . . . . Goooooo ! ! ! !
! ! ”
