Reviews Maui 15K 2008
By Louis Tomsic The Maui 15K began Sunday morning at 6:50A at Napili Park. The race course is point to point so in order to get to Napili Park, school buses shuttle runners to Napili Park at 5:45A and 6:15A from Prison Street parking lot in Lahina and Whalers Village in Kaanapali. The 15K race had over 250 runners. The bathrooms at Napili have only 2 toilets so if you have to go to the bathroom badly, I would recommend sitting in the front of the bus because there are small lines for the bathroom. The bathrooms were freshly cleaned and stocked up with soap and toilet paper that morning which was nice. If you take the first bus and arrive early, you are treated by a completely blackened sky with sparkling stars and a sliver moon. The race course is mostly downhill but it does involve slightly rolling hills till you run past the enterance to Kanapali and then the course is all flat the last 3 miles to the finish line at Kamehameha Iki Park at the very south end of Lahina. The start of the race is a small 1/10 uphill where you make a right turn and follow the Honoapiilani Highway to Front Street and finish at the park. There were 4 aid stations evenly spaced out that offered water. The race conditions were ideal with no winds, no humidity and clear skys. Race refreshments included oranges, pineapple, bagles, water and coffee. Guitar music made for a nice atmosphere waiting for the award ceremony. I enjoyed running the 15K. There is also a 5K run option too for those who want to run a shorter race. Next year the race director said that this race may become a Maui's second marathon avaliable during the year.
