Passion for Perfection 5K

On April 29, the Bishop Museum held their first annual 2006 Passion for Perfection 5K Fun Run and Relay, where 78 runners/walkers participated. It was a perfect day for a run on the outskirts of such a magnificent museum loaded with incredible heritage and artifacts. Individual and two person relay teams took part. Times were provided by Hawaii ’s very own, and well-known Timeline Corporation. Medals and trophies were awarded to the top 3 individuals in 5-year age groups, and to the Top 5 individual and Top 5 Corporate Relay Teams. Award recipients stood on Olympic styled podiums with inspiring Olympic music playing in the background.

There were also awards for the Top 10 teams and top 10 individuals coming to their closest predicted times. If participating in this, watches were not allowed to be worn or carried. Individuals and teams initially indicated their estimated times on their race applications.

The race course was confined within the following streets: Bernice Street , Houghtailing, N. King Street , and Kalihi Street/Likelike Hwy. Participants were not required to cross any major intersections. After the first loop of 1.7 miles, runners returned through the Bishop Museum parking lot, then back out for another 1.4 mile loop down most of the same streets as the first loop before finishing in grand style at the museum.

There was a grand prize giveaway, random drawings, and free frisbees, hacky sacks, and other items. There were plenty of donuts, snacks, fruit, juices, etc. Their dedicated volunteers from local schools helped the event to run smoothly. These volunteers were provided a well-deserved meal for their loyal services. Everyone was comfortable sitting - - and playing - - on the immaculate green grass lawn.

Post race entertainment was held on the Great Lawn in front of the Bishop Museum , and included:
· Tiny Tadani & Dawn O'Brien from KHUI Radio Station and “Tiny TV”. Tiny provided his perfect MC announcer skills before the race, and sent the runners on their way at the start. Frank Delima with his very funny and number one comedy acts after the run. Kalihi YMCA's Club 21 between the ages of 12-18 with their incredible and inspiring dance routines.

A mini-health fair took place which included the following exhibitors:
· HMSA
· Kalihi Palama Health Center
· American Heart Association
· American Lung Association
· K-Vibe
· Kalihi YMCA
· Coalition for a Drug Free Hawaii

Major sponsors included Bishop Museum, USA Track and Field, HMSA, Education Works, Zippys, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, Tyson & KYD Distributors. Other sponsors included Pepsi Bottling Company, Germaine's Luau, Ala Moana Center, Meadow Gold, Blockbuster Video, Jamba Juice, Samurai, Inc. - Aiea, Liliha Bakery, Love's Bakery & The Running Room

Funds raised by this important event will benefit the Kalihi Education Coalition (KEC) and the KEC Scholarship Fund. More information on this great organization can be found at their website at www.kec-hawaii.org .
