Tradewind Triathlon Race Review
The Tradewind triathlon was held on Sunday, November 18, 2007 at 7:30A. The weather was windy with some drizzle before the swim. The triathlon was a 500m swim, 11 mile bike and 5K run. Steve Foster, the race director has done an excellent job in creating a race course that tests each aspect of the triatheles skill. After the safety brief, the race started promptly.
The race started at Hangor 5 at the pier. During the swim, the sun was very bright in the middle of the course on the way to going around the second bouy. There is a green carpet to protect the swimmers feet while getting out of the water and making the way to the first transition. Fresh water was sprayed on all competitors as they completed thier swim which eliminated the salty taste in the mouth while on the bike. This was a nice touch that was added by the race director.
The bike course consitsed of 2 loops. It was challenging because it had a hilly section in the middle with a sharp hairpin turn. The bike course weaved up and down the runway at times into a sharp headwind where bike speed slowed conciderably and a bike helmet helped break the wind. When the tailwind was present on the runway, bike speeds of 30 MPH could be obtained. The bike to run transition was in a different area from the swim to bike transition.
The 5K run was the best part of the triathlon because it was a hilly challenge. The first mile ran away from the start for 400m before the first 600m uphill and then 600m downhill on the front of Radar Hill. Once downhill, a right hand turn lead back up hill again to the top of the back of Radar Hill. At the top of the main road, a right hand turn up to the halfway point of the radar station was made till it was 1 mile around the housing area and back downhill to the finish.
The grand prize was a free bicycle drawn from random and awarded to a lucky entrant. Refreshments included bananas, oranges and gatoraid. Awards were bowls given to the top 3 overall and medals to age group winners.
The finishers t-shirts were white short sleeve with a nice looking design in the back. I liked the design because it was fresh and new.
It could have been very easy to get lost on this course but there were over 25 volunteers that made doing this triathlon a pleasure. Kaneohe Marine Core Base is putting on some of the best races on the island. I would recommend doing this traithlon if you want a good challenge and some fun.
