Fort DeRussy Biathlon 2008
By Louis Tomsic The Fort DeRussy Biathlon was held on March 8, 2008 at 7A. The day was sunny and beautiful. Packets were picked up from the Point gym at the Hale Koa hotel the day before. If you are doing the team event, be careful to check that the volunteers give you 2 packets with 2 shirts. Sign up early for this event because it fills fast and was the largest the race has been in its 10 year history.
The light green t-shirts were beautiful this year with a big flower in the lower right. The refreshments after the race included several fruits, baegels, jamba juice, other drinks and popsicles.
This years competition was close between Ashley Dustow, Chad Seymore and his brother.
The biathlons have a short course and a long course to do. The short course is half the distance of the long course. the long course runs 5K first by doing 2 loops around Fort Derussy Park. The run to swim transition is in front of Hale Koa Hotel.
The long course swims a 1000m course around several bueys finishing about 5o meters up the beach Diamond Head side. The swimmers have a bit of disoriention till they race the final 30 meters to the finish on the sand. Kelly Hupp who is the race director does and excellent job to ensure the swimmers know where to go to the finish. A lot of spectators line the shore watching all the competitors.
Once the adults finished thier biathlon, the different heats for the kids biathlon began and finished on a shorter race course. If you live in Hawaii or visiting, The Fort DeRussy Biathlon is a quality race to do in the Waikiki area with your family.
