The Great Aloha Run was Presidents Day, February 18, 2008.
The weather was sunny and there was no strong February winds. It was near ideal racing conditions as Todd Iochavali #4 won the race. Christian Madsen #2 gave a strong challenge all the way to the finish. The race course is from
Aloha Tower in downtown Honolulu to Aloha Stadium with a
total distance of 8.15 miles.
This years race "Sounds of Freedom" military formation runners seemed to have more of a turnout congesting Ala Moana for about a mile before the race course opened up under the Nimitz Highway. This is all part of the challenge of running the Great Aloha Run.
The Great Aloha Expo was a lot of fun this year. It is held 3 days before the race and alows you to get some good deals on running things while you pick up your race number. The Great Aloha Run Expo is held at the Neal Blaisdale Center.
At the finish, the award ceremony did not have all the pomp and circumstance of previous years. I missed not seeing the top 10 female and male winners get thier awrds individually. Carol Kai does a great job putting on one of the greatest races to run on Oahu. I have run 20 of the past 23 runnings of the Great Aloha Run. It is a race that reaches out to the community and brings people together. For some people, it is there only race of the year. The race is open to all runners and walkers. Give it a try next year.
