The Johnny Faerber 10K was run at 6A on March 11, 2007 in the cover of
night. The race finishes just as the sun comes up for 200 runners this year. A feature that the
Mid pacific Road Runners Club allows is that some of its members who
walk the race courses get to start the race earlier if they choose.
They check in with the timer, Sam Aucoin and he writes down thier start
time. This gives everyone more time to have refreshments and coverse
before the award cerimony.
The race is names after one of the greatest coaches who ever coached at
the University of Hawaii, Johnny Faerber. Johnny coached womens
cross-country and track and field till he retired in 2003. He was also
responsible in the early leadership of the Mid Pacific Road Runners
Club.
The race course has undergone several changes starting out in the late
1980's being a hilly course in Kaneohe. In 1997, the race course moved
to Kapolani park where it has stayed. The course runs up and over
Diamond Head on the ocean side doing a small loop in Kahala and then
finishing at the Honolulu Marathon finish. In 2003, the MPRRC voted to
open the race up to male and female runners. Previous to that year, the
race was an all males race.
Refreshmenst after the race included water, gatoraide, oranges, and
several varieties of sodas including my favorite, Mountain Dew. Connie
Comiso collects cans after the race for recycling which is good for the
race and racing community. Awards are the traditional MPRRC medals that
have been given out since the 1980's for age division winners. Mike
Richards suggested to me that instead of medals, one of these days,
cookies could be baked for the age division winners or something
different.
The MPRRC has seen some radically new changes in the executive committe for race management. New officials include:
1. President Helen Chisum
2. President-Elect Paula Carroll
3. 3rd Vice President Public Affairs Beth Blackburn
4. Treasurer Chris Mewhort
I look for some great things to come from the MPRRC this year. If you
are interested in becoming involved with the Oahu racing community,
there is a spot for vice president of race operations. Contact the
president at MPRRC and she will tell you what is involved at
www.mprrc.com Tell them that you heard about this at Athletes HI. We
care about making our racing community better and giving our athletes
in Hawaii the best customer service.
